Jølstad is the largest funeral bureau in Norway, with offices in cities across the country and thousands of families to help every year. When a death happens, an advisor has traditionally driven out to meet the family, sat down at the kitchen table, and filled in the whole arrangement by hand, product by product, page after page. INFIGO built the system that lets a family do most of that themselves, at their own pace, from home.
01 · The context
Paperwork, one kitchen table at a time
Every arrangement meant an advisor on the road and a thick stack of forms, then days of phone calls to fill the gaps. The bureau wanted to automate the intake: collect and process a family’s choices in one place, without an advisor chasing missing details for a week.
The catch is that this is not an ordinary form to design. It arrives on the worst week of someone’s life, so it had to feel calm and human, never like filing a tax return.
02 · The build
A form that doesn’t feel like one
We built a guided planning application on WordPress, with a custom plugin doing the real work underneath. Over a hundred fields sit across eight unhurried steps: register, choose a coffin or urn, pick flowers and music, write the newspaper notice, and watch the cost add up as you go. Every screen carries only what it needs, progress saves at any point, and nothing has to be finished in a single sitting.
The newspaper announcement gets the same treatment as the products: choose a symbol, add a photo of the person who died, and see a live preview before anything is committed.
03 · The hard part
A calculator with opinions
Funeral pricing is not a sum of line items. Options depend on other options, certain combinations change the rules, and a wrong total is the last thing a family should have to notice. The cost engine encodes those dependencies, so the running figure is always correct and updates the moment a choice changes.
04 · The long haul
A decade in service
The system launched in 2016 and kept running, quietly, the way it is supposed to. The next year the bureau came back for min-begravelse: the same planning flow, reshaped so a person can arrange their own funeral in advance, on their own terms. It went into the same codebase, by the same hands. The platform grew instead of being rebuilt.
This is one half of a longer relationship with Jølstad. The other is the network of sites behind the group of bureaus.
